So I've been trying to figure out exactly what game this was for the past few years. I remember sinking quite a few hours into it when I was visiting my brother once up in Ohio before he pawned off his PS2. My craving to play mecha themed games recently saw a resurgence since I've been playing Front Mission Evolved, but no matter what I did I couldn't remember that awesome mech tactics game on the PS2.
So I went on GiantBomb and started looking at the Front Mission series of releases, and, low and behold, basically all other Front Mission releases were tactics games. So I started playing today, and damn, this game is just as good as I remember it.
Interestingly, looking back on this game, I see the sort of limitations that Square was working in while developing Front Mission Evolution. A lot of things that seem completely strange to me like the limited customization, strange gun selection, and specific types of weapons and mech bodies, all make a lot of sense looking back on games like Front Mission 4. This series is set in stone, and has a very specific way about it. In a tactics environment I think that it makes more sense, but now that my nostalgia is kicking in, I'm having a crazy new experience playing FM Evolved.
I look forward to writing that review this week... as long as FM 4 doesn't take up all my free time.
